From its extensive Inca ruins and breathtaking landscapes to its diverse climates and rich culture, Cusco, Peru is the ultimate traveler’s paradise. If you only have a short time to take in the best Peru has to offer and want to experience Cusco’s highlights in a stress-free and luxurious way, then the 3 day/2 night Machu Picchu Luxury Tour Package will provide you with the trip of a lifetime.
Your trip will begin in the heart of the ancient Inca Empire, Cusco. Here you will begin traveling into the beautiful hills above the city to Saqsayhuaman, the sprawling ruins of an Inca fortress constructed with huge, skillfully carved stones. This fortress served a crucial military function for the Incas and its durable, complex construction allowed the Incas to maintain control over the city, even through sieges. From these ruins, you will have an impressive view of the whole city of Cusco, and the bright blue sky contrasted against the uniform brown roofs of the city will be an unforgettable sight.
From Saqsayhuaman, you will continue on to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, first stopping to visit the Pisac ruins. Be prepared for more incredible views of the valley and the Inca agricultural terraces built into the steep hillside and used for farming. The Pisac ruins contain many military, religious, and agricultural structures, and it is believed that this site served many purposes, including defending the southern entrance to the Sacred Valley and connecting the Inca Empire to the nearby jungle.
After exploring the ruins, you will descend into the town of Pisac to visit the vast and vibrant Pisac market, where you can browse the seemingly endless stalls of antiques and handicrafts made by local artisans, buying some souvenirs to take home with you. Don’t forget to try some of the local foods being sold throughout the market, like choclo con queso (giant Inca corn with cheese), empanadas, causa (a cold casserole-type dish often made from potatoes, avocado, or hard-boiled egg), and, if you’re feeling especially brave, cuy (baked guinea pig).
You will then travel by private transportation to your hotel, the beautiful Hacienda Urubamba, where you will have the evening free to enjoy the relaxing, slow-paced valley life, or participate in bird watching or guided walks through the hotel’s organic gardens and surrounding countryside. Enjoy the clear valley skies as you look up at a bright maze of stars before settling in for the night.
The second day will begin with a trip to the archaeological complex Moray, characterized by circular agricultural terraces, similar to that of Pisac. From Moray, you will continue to the Salineras, salt mines built into the side of a hill. A highly salty spring feeds these terraced pools, and as the water flows down the hill, it collects in the pools and eventually evaporates, leaving just the salt behind. This method of salt collection dates back to pre-Inca times, and you will almost certainly see families hard at work collecting salt, as the pools are inherited by families and managed communally. Enjoy the spectacular views of the salt mines and don’t forget to pick up a bag of Maras salt to take home with you!
After touring the salt mines, you will stop for an early lunch at a delicious local restaurant before departing by train for Aguas Calientes, the town located at the base of Machu Picchu. From your comfortable train car you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views out the window. As the journey begins, you will see dramatic, snowcapped mountains, fields of growing crops, and finally you will reach the lush, subtropical forest surrounding Machu Picchu. When you arrive at the train station in Aguas Calientes, you will be transported to Pueblo Machu Picchu, your luxurious hotel for the night. At the hotel, you can participate in activities like a guided orchid walk or just relax and enjoy dinner.
On the final day of the tour, you will wake up with the sun to catch the bus, which will wind its way up the steep switchbacks to the entrance of Machu Picchu. As you ascend the stone steps, you will catch your first glimpse of “The City in the Sky” as the early morning fog lifts and the clouds part, revealing the majestic ruins below. Your private guide will lead you around the ruins as you visit the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple, the Intihuatana stone, and much more, learning about their significance all along the way. If you want an extra adventure, you can climb either Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain for incredible views of the ruins, surrounding mountains, and the Urubamba River rushing below from high above the clouds. After a day of exploring and taking in all that Machu Picchu has to offer (including wandering alongside wild grazing llamas and observing other local wildlife), you will say goodbye to Machu Picchu and return by bus to Aguas Calientes.
In the final leg of your journey, you will catch the train once again to relax and ride back to Cusco in comfort. At the train station in Ollantaytambo, your private transport will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco, where you can reflect on your three days high in the Andes mountains: truly the trip of a lifetime.
